Dr. Mark Eakin is an Elder at Warner Memorial Presbyterian Church in Kensington, MD and is active in the National Capital Presbytery through the Earth Care Network and other committees. Formerly member and chair of the NCP Mission Coordinating Committee, he now chairs the NCP Bills and Overtures Committee. He also serves on the steering committees of Presbyterians for Earth Care and formerly Fossil-Free PCUSA. He is a strong advocate for electric vehicles, driving electric since 2017.
Dr. C. Mark Eakin worked for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for 30 years, last directing Coral Reef Watch, a program that forecasts coral reef bleaching and other threats through satellite remote sensing and climate models. Dr. Eakin holds a Ph.D. from the University of Miami and publishes on coral reef ecology, especially the impact of climate change on coral reefs, coral bleaching, ocean acidification, and coral paleoclimatology. He has testified
before the US Congress on the impacts of climate change, has been a contributing author on two Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports, and was Chief Scientific Advisor for the film Chasing Coral, winner of the Best US Documentary award at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and the 2018 Emmy for Outstanding Nature Documentary.
