We live in a culture of fear, and this sets the stage is set for the idolatry of security. After 9/11, we established a Department of Homeland Security, and borrowed billions from our grandchildren to fight two overseas wars in the name of national security. "We say, on our money, 'In God we trust,' " observes William H. Willimon, bishop of the United Methodist Church in North Alabama, "but our military budget suggests that this is a lie." Our trust is in the federal agencies, military campaigns and cutting edge technologies that promise to protect us.


Issues of Civil Union and Christian Marriage - by Bill Teng

As we began our work in earnest as appointed members the General Assembly Special Committee to Study Issues of Civil Union and Christian Marriage, we knew the process was going to be difficult and painful. The main reason for it was that we all came to the table with highly-formed opinions on marriage already and it would be very difficult to try to arrive at any consensus in our conclusion.

This past Christmas Eve, just ten short days ago, I took as the text for my meditation the angels' message to the shepherds: "Behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which shall be to all people." I'd like to share just a portion of that meditation with you:

For the past few years, I have made a personal practice of marking the end of each year by making a list of all of the experiences I want to thank God for in that past year. At the top of my list for 2010 was "not dying."
